these necks dude

Post by kaylakent » Fri May 03, 2024 3:03 pm

there is SO MUCH VARIATION in the kramer necks and not enough ACCURATE descriptions of the shape of these necks it's driving me batty.

i got the kramer sm-1 that has a supposed "Kramer K-Speed SlimTaper C" and it is practically a les paul neck - like a wide U shape. ESPECIALLY in comparison to the jackson soloist i'm about to compare it to in the next vid.

i'm going to have to make a device that accurately shows the shape of these necks on camera down to the mm measurement so people can really see how these necks are. this is such a severely overlooked part of buying guitars online, it is a wonder that they don't put up a graphic with every guitar with the actual shape of the neck profile. instead they just call it whatever and it is CLEARLY NOT THAT.

i already have a design in mind for this device, shouldnt be that hard to make, and i think it'd be an important tool to have on the channel should i continue comparing guitars in this manner. cuz idk about anyone else, but neck shape is up there on the highest order of preference right there with having a routed floyd rose.

The best tool to use for this is a contour gauge. These gauges will give you the radius of every neck. There are thousands of versions. They can be very inexpensive also. Less than $10.00.

The vintage Kramer necks can also be very different from each other. I recently started playing my Trans Blue Sustainer/Claw. The neck is fat and wide. Very different from any other claw neck I have.

I agree with you. Some companies are not that great at giving correct specs on their instruments.

Stew Mac also sell neck profile templates. These can also be used as a reference to compare a neck profile.

No problem. I prefer the plastic teeth, rather than metal versions because I don't want to scratch a guitars finish.

I've played three different GibSwans at GC, and the neck profile has been different on each of them, including some with asymmetrical profile and some not.

Agree the contour gauge is the tool for this. I got mine at Lowes for something like $13. Joe is right that the metal ones have sharp ends that can scratch. I found the metal ones to be slightly more accurate, however, especially when attempting to then trace the contour onto paper for reference and comparison (at least compared to the plastic ones they had a Lowes) so I got the metal one and just put painter's tape on the neck to protect it, but that takes extra time and maybe not worth the hassle for some.

Same. I just 3D printed 10 different neck profile gauges so I can figure out what I might have on my growing collection.

shrug I don’t pay attention to the shape of the back of the neck. All comfort factors are on the front of the neck.
